Darkest Flame by: Donna Grant

I was really intrigued by the series and excited that there were so many to read! I borrowed this first one and let’s just say… I’m intrigued no more! Danae is an asset of MI5 with a  “photographic” memory who is sent on a mission with another agent, Matt. They start swimming underground where he proceeds to try to kill her – resulting in her killing him and being wounded/stuck inside an underground cave. He tells her that they’re trying to awaken something, something that we, the readers know to be dragons of long past. Kellen is sleeping in the cave in his dragon form and watches their fight; he isn’t going to help her but then decides he will because he sees her patch her own wound and is impressed. He calls in the King of all dragons to help and they’re both taken to his home. Kellen has been sleeping for a long time and is surprised to be attracted to her with his hatred of humankind. Danae is very attracted to him once she is conscious and healed but see it’s not reciprocated… this is as far as I got.

I had to stop! The writing is subpar and very juvenile. Danae is an MI5 agent but at the first chance she literally tells her “captors” everything that she knows about the mission and her job in general. I don’t find it believable that a secret agent would immediately give up all of her information, no matter if it were a life or death situation. Maybe it’s just in the movies, but you would think all agents would go through a rigorous training for things such as that? I decided I had to stop when she said, “My orders were to use my photographic memory to record what was in the cave.” Especially when earlier she also said, “It made sense with her photographic memory that they would send her with Matt…”. We get it, you have a photographic memory! Too cheesy and I couldn’t move past it! So, unfortunately this series is a no go for me.
